It’s hard to keep on coming up with new ideas to write about, however old you are. So to try to give you some starters, here are few tips.
- How to’s
“How to’s” are articles on how to do something. If you know how to do something, why not let others know? For example, you might know a good tip for remembering how to spell “necessary” or other tricky words. Or you might know how to get to Level 8 on a computer game. Or you might know how to take apart an old toy to make a laserquest game …
- News
News articles can be really interesting to read. They can also be a little dull! An article’s being in the papers on on TV does not necessarily make it something you’d want to write about. Have a look at newspapers and magazines at home, or online at places like the BBC’s website. Or if you want to report on something that happened recently that didn’t make the news, like an amazing party, that’s fine too! Remember: it’s the news that you’re interested in.
- Campaigns
Campaigns are a great idea. If you gather enough support, you might actually be able to make a difference to the way things are done at FPS. Maybe in 100 years time, children will remember you in the way we remember a Martin Luther King or an Emily Pankhurst.
- Interviews
You can, if you want, do quick interviews. Perhaps of each other, or a teacher, or a parent? You can even video these (if they’re short) , but do remember to prepare your questions beforehand!
- Reviews
Read a good book recently? Seen a good film? Is there a TV show you’re really into, or a game you can;t quite get enough of? What about telling people how much you enjoy one of the clubs? Let other people know what it is and why you like it!
- Trends
Bands, clothes, fashion, slang … share it all in anyway you want.
- Opinion Pieces
Opinion pieces are a little like the news articles above, but with one difference. Rather than just tell people about some piece of news, you write about it and you also add your opinion.
- Ask the Audience
It never hurts just to ask people what they think. You can do this with a poll. Or just a short paragraph. You may get some surprising results that give you ideas for a a new article
- Be creative!
Could you do the write a story? Could you team up with a friend or two and write and 3 part adventure? Or perhaps you’ve got some artwork you’re really proud of? How about adding a picture and telling people how you did it? Or adding a poem? Up to you!
- Pat on the back
Sometimes it’s just nice to say well done or thank you to people. Perhaps a teacher’s been really helpful. Or someone spoke well at assembly?
Even easier, what if you’ve been really impressed by one of your classmates? They might have played well in a match, or done something fantastic in class, or have been a really good friend to you when you were upset.
Anyway, these are just a few ideas. You may well have better ones! Don’t think you have to write loads. Often you don’t need to write more than a paragraph, but once you get going you may find yourself writing a while lot more.
One last thing: this is written by you (the children), not the teachers. Whatever you write, make sure it’s something you want to write about!
Good luck!
